Memory Card Reader is a device which is used for communication with a smart card or a flash memory card. Memory card reader is typically having a USB interface for accessing the data on a memory card such as Compact flash(CF),Secure Digital(SD) or multimedias card(MMC). Many Memory card readers are available with writing capability,due to this feature it can also work as Pen drive.
There are some built-in card readers in some Printers and Personal computers. There are three categories of Card readers such as single card reader,multiple card reader and series card reader. They are categorized depending upon types and quantity of the card slot.
Multiple card reader is a device which is used to communicate with more than one type of flash memory card. Multi card reader do not have any built-in memory capacity but can accept multiple styles and types of memory cards. The number of compatible memory card varies from reader to reader and can include more than 20 different types.

However there are some kinds of memory cards with USB functions that do not require card reader such as Intelligent sticks memory card which can plug directly into USB slot.
While buying a memory card reader,make sure that it supports the type of card required as some models do not support flash cards with more than 1GB.
