Secure Digital Cards - The Flash Memory Cards
SD card stands for Secure Digital cards. SD is a non-volatile memory card which is developed by Matsushita, SanDisk and Toshiba. This SD card is used for a variety of devices such as Digital cameras, Handheld computers,PDA's,Media players,Mobile Phones,Video game console etc.

Standard SD card capacities ranges from 4MB to 4GB and for high capacity SDHC cards from 4GB to 32GB as of 2008 and according to the new specifications SD cards will allow for the capacity of 2 TB.

The SDHC card with capacity greater than 4 GB has compatibility issues with older devices which are not able to read the new format. SDHC cards require SDHC capable device filmware which is generally not found with older devices.
Like other Flash card Technologies,most SD cards ship per formatted with the FAT or FAT 32file system. The file system permits the card to be accessed on virtually any host device with an SD reader.

SD Plus a type of SD card made by SanDisk which has as integrated USB connector which enables it to directly plugged into a USB Port without a need of any special card reader. Capacity display feature enables the user to know how much free space is left on the card.
