XD card is a type of Flash Memory card which is mainly used in Digital Cameras. XD stands for extreme digital. XD cards are used in Olympus and Fujifilm digital cameras and Olympus digital voice recorder which are manufactured by Toshiba Corporation and Samsung Electronics.
XD cards are available in variety of capacities such as 16MB,32MB,64MB,128MB,256MB,512MB,1GB and 2GB.The originally XD cards were available in 16MB and 512MB capacities. Further they released three more versions of memory cards such as Type M,Type M+ and Type H card.
In Type M, is used to achieve the theoretical storage capacity of 8GB the Multi Level Cell architecture. Type M suffers the lower Read and Write speed than the original cards. Type M cards are available in capacities from 256MB to 2GB.

Type H card, has higher data rates as compared to Type M,theoretically almost about 3 times faster than Type M cards. Fuji and Olympus both discontinued the production of Type H cards, considering the high production cost involved in it.
Type M+ Cards, offer a data rate at 1.5 times that of Type M. Type M cards are available in only 1GB and 2GB capacities.
Due to changes in the architectural storage of the cards, compatibility issues are there with the newer Type M+ and Type H with some older cameras. The newer cards are incompatible with some card readers.
SmartMedia,MultiMedia card and Memory Stick are a bit slower as compare to XD cards. XD cards have small form factor in comparison with other memory cards.
